Rep lacrosse teams enjoy unbeaten regular seasons

Tuesday, July 31, 2007 - Submitted by Steve Leblanc, Milton Canadian Champion

Milton's two oldest rep lacrosse teams put the finishing touches on unbeaten regular seasons last week -- doing so in quite different fashions.

The midget Mavericks punctuated a perfect 12-0 campaign by pummeling Elora's second entry squad 13-0 at John Tonelli Sports Centre.

Steady but not severely tested, Gavin Lecky earned the shutout in the regular season-ending blowout, which was even more lopsided than the score would indicate.

Offensive contributions came from up and down the lineup, with Doug Kay scoring three times and assisting on three other goals. Jack Eagles amassed five assists to go along with his single deposit, while close behind with a goal and four helpers was Steven Bennett.

Brad Kitchen (2g, 2a) and Rhys Betts (1g, 3a) aided the mid-week thrashing as well.

Not especially challenged against their Zone 8 Tier 2 competition through the regular season, the midgets will face a much stiffer test this weekend at the 'B/C' Mimico Tournament, which should serve as a strong tune-up for league playoffs, which start Thursday at Tonelli against Cambridge. Game time is 8 p.m.

They'll close out the season at the Ontario 'C' championships August 10 to 12 in Kitchener.

Meanwhile, the bantam Mavericks came awfully close to matching the midgets' perfect regular season the following night at Tonelli -- with a would-be winner by evening standout Bryden Curran ringing off the cross-bar in the dying seconds of play.

The near miss meant the hosts had to settle for a 7-7 tie with Brantford, marking their only blemish on an 11-0-1 season.

Truly pushed for the first time in league play this year -- despite running with less than a dozen players most nights -- the bantams needed a number of big saves by Dylan Clancy and a top-notch effort by loose-ball king Taylor Dredge to stave off defeat.

Curran fueled the offensive side of things with three goals, while some strong team play allowed the Mavericks to lead for much of the night against a formidable opponent with a significantly bigger bench.

The bantams will begin playoff action later this month and cap 2007 with the 'C' provincials August 17 to 19 in St. Catharines.
